I started reading the Omnivore's Dilemma a couple days ago. I never realized just how much corn went into everything. Think about it for a minute. Corn. Massive amounts of it... The human body isn't really the biggest fan of corn.
Still since I saw it on Stewart or Colbert I had wanted to read it, and hence the waiting on the rather long library list and trudging through all this corn knowledge.
It's very informative and somewhat good, but unless the issue interests you you probably won't enjoy it.
Lately I've been laying low, getting ready for the new symester starting tomorrow and writing bad poetry. I also died my hair green but that's another story for another day.
You had to ask didn't ya?
In no particular order:
- Michael Pollan - The Omivore's Dilemma
- Poppy Z. Brite - Soul Kitchen
- Jean Cocteau - Les Enfants Terrible
- Boris Pasternack - Doctor Zhivago
- Akira Yoshimura - On Parole
- Dorothy Allison - Bastard Out Of Carolina
- John Schwartz - Bicycle Days
- Shyam Selvadurai - Cinnamon Gardens
( not counting the comics, manga, etc)
I finished How the light gets in around midnight last night. Good books, I can see why it won so many awards. Kind of along the lines of White Oleander, but compleatly different, if that makes any sence at all.
I reccomend it to anyone who liked White Oleander, it's very much a strong girl story. And lord knows how I eat those up like chocolate sometimes. Plus the cover of the book is really hot. Even not smoking I still find it esthetically attractive. How fucked I know.
I found a copy of that Coyote Shivers song for Mrs. Nikki, it's not the best, there's a glitch or two but it's the only one i could find, if i find a better version I'll post it for you. Mmmm Coyote Shivers. So good.
I was supposed to do things with Lish tonight, but I'm still totally wiped from babysitting. That and mom's all crotchety, and I'm all crotchety. It's one of those days where I don't even want to be around myself let alone other people or allow other people to be around me. Hell even the cats are testy.
I've been trying to think of a trip to take. A trip thats relitivly cheap (as I have maybe 700$ i can use). And Volia!
Whats better is that my aunt uncle and cousins live there so I can stay for free, I can totally get rides to and from the venue. And if I'm super Uber Luckyful I'll get me a tattoo while I'm there.
Let alone that but an opertunity to see the Enigma live (in the flesh if you will) is third on my tattoo list of greats (behind Katzen and Kat Von D - yes I am aware of the weird "Kat" thing, but I gotta love the girls in the buisness).
Theres no way to end a summer vacation and start a symester than a tattoo con.
I took new pictures of the suite today as you can see it's starting to shape up. I've come to realize as I've had to buy another bookshelf that my life is truely music movies and books.
The farmers market was amazing, skuffles, steamed veggie buns, lemon cake, banana bread, apple pie.... not to mention onions the size of my fist. It inspired a stirfry for dinner. Jarod, Janelle and Joey came over for supper they all had burgers while I did stir fry and fresh fruits.
Got the lawn mowed and managed to de-weed portions of the back yard. Which lead to superficial feelings of accomplishment. I seem to be under stress lately, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I hope it's just the impending symester at a new institution. It'll be strange not to be at USask, but I'm up for the challenge and it'll get me closer to where I want to be.
I just finished watching a Documentary on Townes Van Zandt. Totally adore him still. If you've ever seen The Big Lebowski you've probably heard a Townes Van Zandt song. Pancho and Lefty was the first song I had ever heard by him, and I still love it to pieces. So raw. There's something very pure in his songs that I just can ut my finger on.
Tomorrow (or rather later today it is quarter to two in the morning) is the farmers market. Which is important, not only to support local people but also to buy fresh produce. Picked up some fruit from the fruit stand today (they come all the way from B.C. to sell fresh picked fruit) and spent twenty three dollars. Although I did get quite the haul. Cherries, Nectarines, Plums, and Green Grapes. Plus the Taber Corn stand was right beside so I picked up a dozen for $7.00 and then froze most of the dozen so I can eat them whenever. Taber corn is always so amazingly good and fresh. Really the best part about summer is the fresh fruit and veg that one can get. I need to pick up carrots, cucumbers, kolarabi, and maybe some radishes tomorrow. I'm makin myself hungary just thinking about all that fresh fruit in the fridge.
I might also go to the doc tomorrow to check out about all the stomach problems I've been having. For the most part I think it's just acid reflux, the kind mom and Jody have. But I'll need some meds to take care of it cause I really don't want to go citrus free for a while. Pretty much anything that isn't bland hurts my stomach which is rather annoying in the long run, and one really shouldnt' be taking as many rolaids as I do. Gotta than the gene's for that. Even Garnet had a bad stomach, he was just too big a dipshit to do anything about it.
Now however I think I'll go back to reading. I got my shot this morning so I've been back to my old self as far as tearing through the books are concerned. I'm three books away from finishing the Lone wolf and cub series, so I should be done that by the end of the weekend.
I started reading Fast Food Nation (see insert) today. So far it's nothing shocking, I was expecting more umph. *shrug* Some of the things Schlosser is talking about seem almost rudimentary. Of course cars and the oil industry would directly impact our consumption of fast food. You can't walk through a drive thru. It's just not the way it works. Still I'm glad I'm reading it, I'd been stalking it at the bookstore for some time, and since it was a short wait list at the library I got a hold of it rather quickly.
It's been rather low key around here. Except of course for Joey comeing to get babysat today. Bebop got out which lead to a traumatic search and rescue mission. Luckily he didn't get into the intersection a few houses down, otherwise I'd be mourning my dog. Needless to say afterwards I wanted to severly injure my sister-in-law for leaving the back gate open when she knows well enough to shut it. As far as I'm concirned it's yet another nail in the coffin. She's got a problem with the pierced tattooed freaks of the world and I'd never be anything else. *shrug* She can take a flying leap.
Tomorrow I finally get my B12 shot, I'm a couple days behind which is not fun at all. Feeling all gloopy. Talked to the funding office and the student cheques come out next week which means I can go text book hunting. I think I'll also buy a bike, it just seems more logical for the summer/autumn to ride a bike to and from uni rather than catch the bus, and a cheap bike will be cheaper than a student discount pass. I suppose I can always walk. Although that caused some cases of sun stroke during my Summer class.
Many things to concider. Cheers for the inagural post.
Currently I'm listening to Sleater Kinney thought I'd share.
Haven't read the book yet. I recently have started eating corn again, after years of seeing no point in doing... read more
on far too much corn
